Honey Chilli Beef

Ingredients

  • 360 g (¾ lbs) thin-cut sirloin steaks (approx 3 thin steaks) cut into small strips
  • 1 small egg
  • 4 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch)
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ⅛ tsp white pepper
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 4 ½ tbsp sunflower oil divided
  • 1 medium onion peeled and must be sliced into thin strips
  • 1 red chilli finely sliced- discard the seeds if you don’t like it too hot
  • 3 garlic cloves peeled and minced
  • 1 tsp minced ginger
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 3 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato puree paste for US
  • 2 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 6 tbsp caster sugar or superfine sugar
  • 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce I use Thai-style

Instructions

  1. First thing to do is to place the steak strips in a bowl and add an egg. Mix together to totally coat the steak in the egg. ¾ lbs (360 g) thin-cut sirloin steaks,1 small egg.
  2. Add the pepper, white pepper, cornflour and salt. 4 tbsp of cornflour, ¼ tsp black pepper, ¼ tsp salt,1/8 tsp white pepper.
  3. Toss collectedly to coat the steak. It will be a sticky mixture.
  4. Heat 3 tbsp of the oil in a big frying pan (skillet) or wok over a high-heat up until very hot. 4 ½ tbsp of sunflower oi.
  5. You will perhaps need to work in two batches, so when the oil is hot, now add in half the beef – a strip at a time – and spread it out completely.
  6. Cook the steak until dark brown and crispy. Aim not to move the meat around too much as this lessens the amount of crispiness you get. It generally takes about 5-6 minutes to crisp up the beef, with about 3-4 stirs during that time.
  7. With help of a slotted spoon or tongs, take away the beef from the pan and place in a bowl lined with kitchen roll because it can absorb up excess fat.
  8. Add an additional tablespoon of oil and recur – Also cook the second batch of beef then place in the bowl with the first batch.
  9. As soon as you’ve taken apart all the beef from the pan, add the left over ½ tbsp of oil to the pan and turn the heat down to medium.
  10. Add in the sliced onion and cook for 2 minutes until somewhat softened. 1 medium onion
  11. Add in the nicely minced ginger, chopped chilli and minced cloves of garlic and cook at the same time as stirring for 30 seconds. 1 red chilli, 3 garlic cloves, 1 tsp minced ginger
  12. Now add the rice vinegar, tomato puree, soy sauce, sugar, tomato ketchup, and sweet chilli sauce to the pan. 2 tbsp rice vinegar, 2 tbsp tomato puree, 3 tbsp dark soy sauce,6 tbsp caster sugar,2 tbsp tomato ketchup,2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
  13. Turn the heat up and let it bubble for a few of minutes until the sauce begins to reduce a little.
  14. Add the beef back in, give it a gentle stir and heat completely for 1-2 minutes – until the beef is completely hot.
  15. Serve with rice or noodles.

What Goes Well With This Honey Chilli Beef Recipe?

Generally, when I make this but I serve it with rice or sometimes with noodles. Sesame prawn toast and king prawn fried rice will taste well with this dish!

You can also serve this crispy beef recipe with a salad, it goes well with it. Along with broccoli you can add carrots, ribbon shaved cucumber, lettuce and chillies for an extra thrill. You wouldn’t have to cook this salad and you could make it a day before or earlier to save time.

If you need a hot meal, then you can whizz up a quick vegetable stir fry with this crispy beef. This will result in a lovely lunch or dinner idea!

Variations Of Sauce

Doubling the Sauce Ingredients because this makes just more sauce to coat the crispy beef. If you want more sauce, double the sauce ingredients (hoisin sauce, dark soy sauce, honey, vinegar and chilli flakes). I always love to double sauce ingredients when pouring this dish over rice or noodles.

Adjust flavours of sauce to taste and you can play around with the ratio of sauce ingredients to make the perfect taste for you. Adding more soy sauce and hoisin sauce will add a salty flavour and honey will bring extra sweetness.

Tips On Getting Honey Chilli Beef Extra Crispy

Below are three tips I use every single time to validate my beef is always crispy and nice.

  • Make sure the beef is consistently coated in cornflour because its important to ensure a crisp texture in every bite validate no patch goes uncovered.
  • Your oil needs to be hot enough before putting your beef inside. Now put a small piece of beef inside the oil because if the oil is hot already it will start to sizzle rapidly.
  • Don’t be desirous to fry all your beef at once, the oil temperature will drop causing in soggy beef and we don’t want that! I like to cook 3-4 at a time, however you can add more or less dependent on the size of your deep fryer or wok.

Storing & Freezing

It can be set aside in the fridge for around 2-3 days. Ideally, it’s greatest eaten within a few hours of being cooked and If you want to store it in the fridge, make sure to unfreeze it first and reserve in a closed container.
